Alyse Barlow, First Quarter Update

by | Jan 10, 2018

Hello Rotarians!

My name is Alyse Barlow, last year’s scholarship awardee from Eastlake High School, and I am currently a second semester freshman attending the University of Southern California. I came into USC majoring in Biomedical Engineering, but decided to switch to Industrial Engineering when I realized working in a lab is not ideal for me, as I thrive best in a social atmosphere. In the beginning of the semester I joined the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority where I’ve met many of my best friends here at school. This semester was a very busy one where I experienced the toughest classes I’ve ever taken in my 12 years of education. I learned that all the things people told me about the difficulty in finding the “school and social balance” is definitely a challenge, but by the end of the semester I figured out how to work extremely hard and have fun at the same time. I was not as involved as I hoped this semester, but for my Spring semester I plan to join Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and Engineers Without Borders to hopefully find a summer internship and make plans to volunteer abroad. My goal for this semester is to get better grades, become more involved in my University, and to further explore the city of Los Angeles. I will come back next year with another update of how I am accomplishing these goals and I want to thank you all for supporting me throughout my endeavors.

Until next time!

~Alyse Barlow
