About The Community Service Committee
Rotarians have put Service Above Self for more than a century. Through the Avenue of Community Service, Rotarians give back to the places they live in. The projects are as varied as the Rotary clubs that carry them out, but all address the needs of a particular group in our community. Community Service fosters and encourages the ideal of service to the personal, business, and community life of every Rotarian. It also provides opportunities for every Rotarian to exemplify "Service above Self". It is a chance to respond to the local needs of a community.
The members of the Sammamish Rotary work hard to earn the funds that support the good works of the club. The Community Service Committee is a lot of fun in that it allows committee members to focus on their community and fill a need to make it better. This provides self satisfaction and a sense of pride in that the member directly had a part in improving some aspect of life in Sammamish. Whether it's Thanksgiving food baskets or Christmas presents for victims of domestic violence, or a special milk formula for needy babies, it all fills the needs of our community.
In addition to providing grants for worthy activities in our community, in the past year we have also sponsored or participated in these events: - The annual Sammamish Challenge Day Race, a soapbox derby-type race for physically and mentally challenged children. The funds raised over the costs of the event are donated to Life Enrichment Options. - The Sammi Awards, the city’s “Oscar Night”, that recognizes outstanding residents of Sammamish for their local service. - Rotary First Harvest, a Rotary District wide program, which acts as a conduit between farmers and the programs that serve hungry individuals and families in our region. Our members volunteer up to once a month to sort and package surplus food to be delivered to area food banks. - Concerts in the Park, an event that brings free entertainment to Sammamish at Pine Lake Park.
